Suspected DUI Driver Crosses Center Line on State Route 180 Near Sanger in Fresno County

October 19, 2026

A driver suspected of impairment reportedly crossed the center line on State Route 180 and struck a fence on Friday evening, October 16, 2026, near Rio Vista Avenue in Sanger, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver had been headed eastbound on SR-180 in the Fresno County community when the vehicle veered across into the westbound lanes before leaving the roadway entirely. Emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the scene as a precaution, and the California Highway Patrol initiated an investigation into the suspected DUI crash.

According to CHP dispatch logs, a witness reported that the vehicle, described as a gray Toyota sedan, was being driven recklessly in the eastbound lanes before the crossover occurred. The vehicle reportedly made contact with a chain-link fence and ended up stuck approximately 30 feet off the road. Radio traffic noted that the driver was believed to have been drinking and was reportedly seen throwing items from the vehicle before it came to a stop, though neither detail has been confirmed by official report. The driver remained inside the vehicle until emergency crews arrived on the scene.

It was not immediately clear whether anyone was transported for medical treatment. Separately, CHP dispatch logs referenced a second collision in the area involving a black Chevrolet Malibu and a black sedan, along with debris in the roadway, although it has not been confirmed whether that incident was connected to the crossover crash. A tow truck was called to remove the Toyota from where it came to rest off the roadway. The California Highway Patrol has not released the driver's name, age, or whether charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Impaired driving continues to be a leading factor in serious and fatal traffic collisions across Fresno County and throughout the Central Valley. Crossover crashes involving vehicles that drift into oncoming traffic are among the most dangerous types of collisions, as they often result in head-on impacts at combined highway speeds. Motorists traveling along State Route 180 near Sanger are encouraged to remain alert and report any suspected impaired drivers to 911 immediately. Anyone with information about Friday evening's crash near Rio Vista Avenue is asked to contact the California Highway Patrol.
